Effexor XR Withdrawal

Effexor XR Withdrawal

I began taking Effexor in Aug. 1996. (Instant Release Form). By end of year was up to 375 mg daily and gained about 45 lbs. I continued on this dose until end of 1999. Then over a few years reduced dosage to 225 mg daily, then 187.5 mg, 150 mg. By 2003 was down to 75 mg daily now in XR form.

In addition I told my doctor at the VA 3 months ago that effexor wasn't helping anymore and that I was tired of the side effects. He then put me on 100 mg of Wellbutrin SA each day which I am still taking.

Going down to this dose on effexor did not change my mood and I began losing weight, about 35 lbs. Incidentally, I weighed 155 when I began using Effexor and eventually reached 255 by end of 2002. I now weigh 225.

Tired of the side effects and only temporary improvement in mood, I tapered down to 37.5 for about one month beginning on Feb. 15, 2006.

5 days ago on March 19, 2006, I stopped taking Effexor. Within a couple of days I began to experience some withdrawal symtoms notably, occasional minor dizziness and "brain zaps" Also, I have some feelings of minor agitation and nausea. These symptoms come and go. Last night I had a terrible crying spell which lasted for 90 minutes. At other times, I feel just fine.

My appetite is reduced but I do feel a bit better when I eat.

It's only been five days and I am trying to keep my chin up and tell myself that each day will get better. I think the fact that I stopped using at 37.5 mg is a plus for me and my prognosis for success.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions that will help me handle the withdrawal side effects. Should I go back to taking 37.5 mg say every other day for a week and then take this dose every 2 days and so forth? I don't want to but if it would help I will.

I also realize that my withdrawal are are far less severe than many what individuals have gone through and I am thankful for that.

Thanks for listening!
