Discontinue Celexa Therapy

If you're ready to begin discontinuing celexa therapy - it's important to keep in mind that many people report serious withdrawal symptoms when they attempt to discontinue celexa.

From the clinical trials used to 'prove' celexa is safe and effective for major depressive disorder - 16% of the patients discontinued treatment due to adverse side effects.

After eight weeks of treatment, abrupt discontinuation of treatment caused:

  • anxiety
  • emotional indifference
  • impaired concentration
  • headache
  • migraine
  • paresthesia
  • tremor

Interestingly, celexa is claimed to not be addictive. Instead, these are called 'discontinuation symptoms'.

Many more of these symptoms have been reported by those patients who chose to discontinue celexa therapy in the years since those clinical trials were conducted.

Celexa should always be tapered slowly - never abruptly. And only under a doctor's supervision.

Many people who write me have insisted on quitting 'cold turkey' - with painful and sometimes long-term results.

By slowly tapering off the celexa you have a much greater chance of not experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

It would also be wise to consider taking Vitamin E and fish oil capsules.

Celexa makes unknown changes in your brain chemistry and mechanics. By drinking lots of water and taking those two supplements, AND tapering slowly, you have the greatest chance of reducing or even eliminating the painful withdrawal symptoms.

The manufacturer of celexa (Forest Laboratories) recommends tapering over a one- or two-week period. You may wish to discontinue even more slowly.

Forest Laboratories also is pushing hard to get patients to discontinue celexa therapy so they can begin to take lexapro. This is due to the fact that patent protection has ended for celexa, and it is now available in a much cheaper generic version (citalopram). The profit has drained out of celexa.

Don't be fooled by the hype. Lexapro is no better than celexa.
