Effexor For OCD

Effexor, while not FDA approved for OCD - is often prescribed by doctors as an 'off-label' usage.

Because a medical doctor - in most countries - can prescribe almost any medication for almost any illness.

The cause of obsessive compulsive disorder remains a mystery. For some people, effexor has been shown to help dull the symptoms.

The main problems with effexor are it's severe side effects and withdrawal symptoms. Many people suffer horrible side effects when they attempt to stop taking effexor.

It's not uncommon for patients to feel compelled to open a capsule of effexor, count out the granules, and take one less granule everyday. As a way to avoid the withdrawal pain.

Effexor also causes strong suicide urges in a small percentage of patients who begin taking it. These suicide urges usually occur when effexor is started, or when the dosage is changed.

Also, OCD symptoms generally respond as well - if not better - to cognitive behavioral therapy (CDT). CBT usually seems a wiser choice for dealing with OCD since there's no risk of effexor side effects. While CBT is somewhat time consuming and tedious - it does provide a certain degree of control for the patient.

They're taking an active part in healing themselves. They're actually doing something, as opposed to just popping a pill and hoping.

Effexor generally takes about three months of use before symptoms are effectively masked - if it works at all. Effexor for OCD produces positive results about half the time.

Effexor should be considered a last resort for OCD - not a front-line treatment. That's just my personal opinion. I'm not a doctor, only a researcher and writer.

If you've never taken effexor before, you just don't know how your body and brain will react. It can be like gambling: you might win; you might lose; you have no way of knowing beforehand.
