Effexor

Note: Read the latest news on Effexor at the bottom of this page!

Maybe you're taking this antidepressant right now, and the side effects are getting to you.

Maybe you're trying to discontinue Effexor (or the 'xr' version), and the withdrawal symptoms are overwhelming.

It's a crying shame. And it doesn't have to be this way.

There were such high hopes for Effexor! It was supposed to be the 'next big thing' for treating the symptoms of depression.

It was supposed to be an improvement over the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRI's.

Effexor works by manipulating not only serotonin but norepinephrine as well. Rather than an SSRI, Effexor and Effexor xr are considered SSNRI's - selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors.

But there's always a price to pay.

Effexor Side Effects

For one thing, you are twice as likely to have the following side effects (as compared to a typical SSRI, such as Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, or Paxil)

  • Anorexia

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

  • Hypertension

  • Hyponatraemia (presumably from all that sweating)

  • Increased sweating

  • Nausea

  • Syncope (fainting from lack of oxygen in the brain)

  • Vomiting

  • Weakness

Fortunately, the percentages of patients experiencing anxiety, agitation, dizziness, pruritis, rashes, tremor, and urticaria are statistically the same for SSRI's as they are for SSNRI's.

Effexor (venlafaxine) was launched in the United States in December of 1993. Who knew that the 'clinical trials drop-out rate' was the second-highest of any prescription drug, trailing only Paxil?

19% of the patients who signed up to test Effexor were forced to stop, because the side effects were intolerable.

In fact, one-fourth of all persons starting Effexor have side effects the first day! Another one-fourth have side effects the first week.

Other potential problems can occur if you have:

    high blood pressure,

    heart, liver, or kidney disease,

    history of seizures, or

    history of mania.

Effexor and Effexor xr also cause fluid retention, which of course makes you gain weight. Incidently, the solution for fluid retention in to drink more water.

(Fluids are retained by the body to dilute toxins. Drinking more water dilutes the toxins even more, flushing them out of the body through breathing, sweating and urinating - so you have less need to retain water.)

Effexor has one of the worst side effects profiles of any antidepressant. Here's the 'official' list of side effects with the percentage of patients reporting them during clinical trials:

  • Nausea 37%

  • Headache 25%

  • Sleepiness 23%

  • Dry mouth 22%

  • Insomnia 18%

  • Constipation 15%

  • Nervousness 13%

  • Raised blood pressure 13%

  • Fatigue 12%

  • Sweating 12%

  • Male sexual disfunction 12%

  • Decreased appetite 11%

Remember, this doesn't include the 19% who could not be convinced to continue the drug trial, instead dropping out because the side effects were simply too severe.

Another problem with Effexor that makes it one of the worst antidepressants is the potential for withdrawal symptoms.

Because Effexor has a half-life of about five hours, withdrawal symptoms can develop from missing only one dose.

(The half-life refers to the amount of time it takes the body to metabolize one-half of the drug.) Five hours is a frighteningly short half-life for a drug of this nature. It almost guarantees problems.

In addition to reading about Effexor, it's also important to understand the underlying causes that would lead someone to this in the first place.

Are you satisfied with your life right now?

I almost feel guilty because my life has become so enjoyable and so easy. Especially since I remember how miserable I used to be.

Basically it comes down to making one slight shift in what you do everyday, and you can watch in amazement as your life slowly begins to start working out in almost every way.

It's such an important change that I've written a complete e-book about it. And I'd like to give you a copy for free. All you have to do is write your first name and primary email address into the space below, and you'll be receiving a link to download the e-book right away.
