GlaxoSmithKline - Paxil CR
GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturer of paxil cr, is the second largest pharmaceutical
company in the world (behind Pfizer).
It employs approximately 110,000 people worldwide, of which over 40,000
are in sales and marketing.
GlaxoSmithKline is based in the United Kingdom, but was subject to the
largest IRS fine ever paid by a corporate entity: $3.1 Billion.
Also in the US, the court case Hoorman, et al vs. SmithKline Beecham Corp
ruled that patients who purchased paxil or paxil cr for a minor child may
be eligible for benefits under a $63.8 million Proposed Settlement.
The lawsuit was based on the fact that GlaxoSmithKline promoted paxil and
paxil cr to children and adolescents while knowingly withholding information
about the medicine's safety and efficacy for minors.
Over 5000 lawsuits have been filed against GlaxoSmithKline since paxil was
first approved in 1992.
In a rare and surprising move, US Marshals in 2005 (under direction of the FDA) raided manufacturing and distribution centers
and seized paxil cr tablets that allegedly were not up to FDA standards.
(The tablets, which might break in half, were already under voluntary recall by GlaxoSmithKline - but apparently not all the affected lots of paxil cr were recalled.)
Currently in the UK, a 'class-action' type litigation alleges fraud
against GSK on the grounds it lies about the severe withdrawal symptoms
experienced by patients attempting to discontinue taking paxil and paxil cr.
GlaxoSmithKline is also being investigated by the UK's Serious Fraud Office
for paying bribes to Saddam
Hussein in the discredited food-for-oil program a few years back.
Despite it's checkered past and present, GlaxoSmithKline was voted one of the
top 100 companies to work for if you're a working mother.
And there are actual books available on 'how to land a pharmaceutical sales job'. Strange but true.
In addition to reading to reading about GlaxoSmithKline,
it's also important to understand the underlying causes
that would lead
someone to such a painful place of needing paxil cr.
