Paxil Suicide

Many people love paxil, and suffer few or no side effects at all from taking the drug.

Others are not so fortunate.

Perhaps the worse side effect of paxil - suicide - has already caused the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) to ban the use of paxil and other SSRI’s in children and adolescents.

The British agency said last December that the drugs were over-prescribed, but they could be safely used by adults. However, a recently published study in the online journal BMC Medicine may help change the ‘over-prescribing’ of paxil and the other SSRI’s

Due to the risk of suicide in patients taking them, it seems the maker of paxil - GlaxoSmithKline - neglected to submit its original detailed data from the clinical trials that ‘proved’ paxil was safe and effective. Instead, the MHRA received only an edited summary.

However, when Dr. Ivar Aursnes and his colleagues obtained the original trial results from the Norwegian regulatory authority - they discovered patients taking paxil were seven times more likely to commit suicide than if they were taking a placebo. Dr. Aursnes writes that, after studying the original data, it “strongly suggests that the use of SSRI’s are connected with increased intensity per year of suicidal attempts.”

The data makes “a strong case for a conclusion, at least with a short time perspective, of an increased risk of suicidal attempts in adults taking antidepressants.”

The MHRA apparently has no interest in Dr. Aursnes’ study.

Paxil side effect - suicide.

Taking Paxil is like putting a loaded gun to your head. You better be damn sure you need it before you start. (And for some people, short-term antidepressant therapy is the best option.)

Sometimes a person’s depression has progressed to the point that antidepressants will do more good than harm. At least for a while. The trick is to avoid the trap of co-dependency with antidepressants. Instead, look at antidepressant use as offering a window of opportunity to heal yourself so you can stop the drug use as soon as possible.

My observation has been that if someone is going to attempt suicide because of paxil (or other SSRI) they will usually do it soon after they begin taking the antidepressant.

Therefore, if you or someone you know is starting paxil or any of the other SSRI’s such zoloft or lexapro or effexor, careful observation is mandatory during the first few weeks and especially the first few days of beginning the drug.

If it were someone I knew and cared about, I wouldn’t let them out of my sight during that period. I’ve heard first hand stories from people who lost loved ones due to suicide after beginning antidepressant therapy.

I’d also like to say that suicide ideation is rare for those starting antidepressants.

The odds are, you won’t commit suicide just because you start taking paxil or one of the others. (However, there is a good chance you'll go through hell when you try to stop taking paxil.)
