The Technique of Weeding Negative Futures

by Mark Ivar Myhre

The technique of 'weeding negative futures' is performed during what I call 'meditation', because it involves:

(1) consciously entering an altered state, and

(2) creatively generating visual images with your imagination.

Don't get hung up on achieving an altered state. People often enter an altered state while reading a good book, or even while watching their favorite TV show. Simply follow the process as outlined, and you will be in the right state of mind.

The entire meditation may take fifteen or twenty minutes. Find a time and place when you won't be disturbed.

Spend a few minutes to 'set the mood'. This may mean turning down the lights and unplugging the phone.

Find a comfortable position. You may want to lie down, or sit, or perhaps recline in an easy chair. You want to be as comfortable as possible without getting sleepy. The more alert you are, the better.

Consider stretching out various parts of your body.

Once you are seated or lying down, take a little time to relax your body. Gently close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths.

Now take a few more.

Begin to relax your body. As you consciously focus on each part of your body, telling it to relax, your are sending a message to your subconscious mind.

As you relax your body while simultaneously heightening your awareness, you will be coming closer to your subconscious. The lines of communication begin to open up. Generally you would spend two or three minutes on this stage.

The next step is to slowly count from 'five' to 'one', with the intention of entering an altered state at the count of 'one'. It's the intention that does it, not the counting. The reason you count, 'five, four, three, two, one' is to get you and your subconscious mind to focus together.

At the count of 'one', imagine yourself in a beautiful place in nature. It may be an enchanted meadow. Maybe you are in a valley surrounded by magestic mountains. Maybe you are in a prairie, or down by the sea.

Go to a place where you would love to be.

Open your senses, one at a time. Visualize what it would look like, in your ideal setting. Sense the sky, guessing what time of day it must be. See the clouds. Now sense the ground beneath your feet. Look around you at the landscape.

Now listen for the sounds. What sounds would you expect to hear in a setting like this? Imagine them. Let them come into your range of hearing. Listen closer. Hear the quiet sounds, the ones you wouldn't normally hear.

Now sense the smells, the subtle smells of nature. What would you imagine the scents to be?

Also, open your sense of touch. Feel the ground. Feel the wind in your face. Reach out to touch a flower, a leaf, or a tree. Make it come alive.

After you have sensed your surroundings for a minute or so, here are the seven steps to follow:

1. Create a circle on the ground in front of you.

You can do this with your hand, your foot, a nearby stick - or just imagine it happening. Use a 'magic wand' if you wish. Whatever feels right to you. Make it about three feet (one meter) in diameter - a perfect circle on the ground.

2. Imagine the problem, whatever it is.

Whatever you want to change, think about it. Feel it. How does it make you feel? What does it do to you? Get a sense of the 'wholeness' of it. Quantify it. 'Contain it'. De-mystify it. Grab hold of it - all in your imagination.

3. Dump the problem into the circle.

Like taking out the garbage, put it all into the circle. Maybe it's like used motor oil. Maybe it's like molasses.

Sense a flow of energy coming out of you - out of your heart, your solar plexus, your throat, your forehead - wherever seems appropriate.

Maybe it's solid, like old bones, or perhaps burnt garbage. Visualize it any way it makes sense. Squeeze it out of you like toothpaste - whatever works, just get it out of you and let it pile up completely inside the circle.

Usually I will visualize 'chunks of solid' coming out of each part of my body, and forming a garbage dump. Then I 'pour' the liquid goo from my heart, throat, etc. - on top of the solid. It ends up looking like a nasty crushed-up oil well.

Be inventive. Be original. Any way you visualize your problem is the right way, so don't worry about doing it correctly. Just feel the emotions and get them out of you and into the circle.

4. Step into the circle.

Step into this trash pile that is your problem. Step into your circle. As you stand in the circle, begin to feel all this garbage re-absorb into you.

Allow it to enter you completely. Visualize all the garbage entering your body as it disappears from view.

Sense it any way you can, knowing that it doesn't make 'sense'. Earlier, you were feeling and sensing the problem - now, it is feeling and sensing you.

Like shuffling a deck of cards, you first put in outside of you, and now you are bringing it back.

5. Visualize a tunnel of light.

After you have finished 'taking back' all this garbage that personifies your problem, a tunnel of light begins to form. See the tunnel.

Is it before you? Above you? Below you? Let it be where it is.

Allow yourself to be pulled into this tunnel of light.

6. Travel to the 'negative future'.

The tunnel is not straight, but rather it undulates, moving up and down like a giant 'sine wave' pattern. Like gently rolling hills, you float through the tunnel to your bundle of resonance that is literally 'creating' the problem you wish to end.

To help anchor yourself in this bundle of resonance that is your negative future, you may wish to first visualize your face. How does it look when you are in the throes of your problem? Can you see the despair? Can you sense the desperation, the frustration, the anger that this problem invokes?

The face you see may seem older than you are. Let it be what it is.

Now feel yourself standing on solid ground. See the rest of your body. Be in the place where the 'negative future' is acted out.

Sense the surroundings. Are you indoors, or out? What does it look like?

Slow down. Be calm. Let it in.

Don't worry about actually being able to see clear images in meditation. Trying too hard diminishes the results.

7. Retrieve your energy.

To do this, it's helpful (but not necessary) to find the focal point of the scene. It may be the image of your eyes, your heart, or your hands.

Where would you imagine the energy is focused in this image? There are no right or wrong answers.

Usually, it will be with whatever image you see the most clearly. Maybe it's a piece of furniture. It could be anything.

After you find what seems to be the center of the image, start sucking the juice out of this scene, like you have a giant straw that you stick into the focal point of the scene. Retrieve your energy, - the energy you gave this resonance.

By your will, by your love, by your imagination, draw the energy out of the scene and into you.

Force it to come to you - it's your energy.

It must come, if you choose.

Don't worry about doing it right. Just do it any way that works for you. Make it happen. Demand it. It will come.

When you feel a sense of completion, stop.

Next, visualize the scene falling apart, crumbling under it's own weight. or perhaps it just turns to dust and blows away in the wind. Whatever makes sense, - visualize the scene ending, and it will.

Stand empowered. Feel a sense of completion. Stand on your 'metaphoric mountaintop'. Know that you are changed.

When you are ready, count yourself out of meditation by counting from 'one' to 'five' - the opposite of when you started.

You have now completely ended a negative future, and retrieved some of your energy and power in the process.

Remember, this so-called negative future is a bundle of resonant energy that you created some time in the past, and it has been keeping your problem alive, whatever that problem is.

I know it's hard to believe, but just give the technique a chance to work!

An alternative to memorizing this technique is to record it onto a cassette. Simply read it onto your cassette recorder (adding appropriate emotion!), and then listen to the tape, mentally following along by visualizing the appropriate images.

Or, you may purchase the meditation technique on a cassette tape already recorded and narrated much better than I could do. This is how I learned the technique - by listening to the tape a few times, and then visualizing it on my own.
