The Theory of Weeding Negative Futures

This technique is probably going to be very, very, strange to you. It really makes no sense at all. And yet,...

'the proof is in the pudding' as the saying goes.

Meaning if you will give it a chance, the technique of 'weeding negative futures' can work wonders, not only with

obsessive compulsive disorder,

anxiety,

panic attacks, and

post traumatic stress disorder -

but for just about any other problem you could imagine as well.

Before we look at 'weeding' a negative future, what the heck is a 'future' and why should I even care?

  • To over-simplify the process, you 'mentally create' a 'future' by visualizing a certain image and adding emotion to it.

  • The reason you should care is because this 'future' is creating the problem you want to end.

An overview of the process leading to the creation of a 'future'

  • It all starts when something triggers a mental image in your mind - such as an event you witness.

  • Depending upon the clarity and the impact of this image, you then choose to either dismiss it or to focus on it further.

  • If you choose the latter, you then begin to think and feel about what the image means to you. The thinking, feeling and meaning create the emotional intensity of this now-growing mental image.

  • When a 'clear' and 'impactful' mental image is infused with 'emotional intensity', something happens. A resonance is created.

"A resonance occurs when separate components are combined in a certain way. For example, when you take a hollow tube, a switch, a tiny bulb and a couple of batteries - and combine them in a certain way - you have the resonance of light.

You have something much greater than the sum of the parts.

The light produced by your new flashlight is so much more than the individual parts that make it up. In the same way, this resonance of energy is so much more than the images and emotions of which it is comprised."

  • This bundle of resonant energy is called a 'future'.

Once again, you 'mentally create' a 'future' by visualizing a certain image and adding emotion to it.

It's a natural process of everyday living and we all do it on a regular basis. Some of these bundles are positive, some are negative, and many are neutral.

Because you have infused these images with emotion, they have energy - your emotional energy. The more emotional energy you 'donate' to this image, the stronger it becomes.

You have given it a certain 'realness' and it now potentially has influence over you. It exists. It is 'real'.

  • These bundles of 'future' energy are stored in the subconscious mind. Rather than simply disappearing into thin air - these bundles have a life of their own. They must 'go' somewhere, and that somewhere is your subconscious mind.

  • These bundles put out a 'magnetic attraction'. They attract you to a certain future. Like a moth to a flame, so you are drawn to this 'future'.

  • There are many of these bundles, each one unique. They each pull you in a particular direction. Taken together, they create a certain overall direction for your life to move towards.

It's like all the various meteorological factors coming together to create a certain direction for the wind to blow, (and you are in a sailboat in the ocean).

  • Taking back your 'contribution' to these bundles makes them evaporate - and you change instantly. As you change the 'meteorological factors' - the unseen forces tugging at your life, so you change the 'wind' - the direction your life is headed.

Let's say that you want to sail to the east, but the wind is blowing to the west. By neutralizing some of the meteorological factors that cause the wind to blow west, the other factors become more impactful, thus increasing the chances of the wind blowing east.

You don't need to take this simple analogy too far. In fact, you don't need to understand any of this to take advantage of the actual technique - any more than you need to understand how an internal combustion engine works to drive a car.

Just get in, turn the key, and start driving!

Conventional wisdom states that you can adjust your sails and you can adjust your rudder, but you can't change the direction of the wind.

Certainly it's important to adjust your sails and your rudder - in fact I have written a whole book on the subject of taking charge of your life. In addition to that, however, it makes a lot of sense to create a favorable environment in which to do the 'work' of adjusting.

The technique of weeding negative futures will do just that.

Another way to view these 'futures' you create is to imagine them as some sort of to-do list. Think of it as your to-do list of a different sort - a three- dimensional to-do list.

When you write down items on a traditional list, you create a certain resonance (however small) that makes it a little more likely they will get done, all things being equal.

The mental images you create in your mind (usually without even being aware of them) - also create a certain resonance that make them a lot more likely they will get done, if you 'get emotional' about it.

Much more powerful than a written to-do list, these soon-forgotten mental images become stored in the subconscious mind. But they are still there.

And they still have impact on you, because of their resonance.

The more resonance they have, the more impact they have.

What determines the degree of resonance? The amount of energy you give to it. The more dramatic and/or traumatic an event is, the more emotional energy you are likely to give to the mental picture you have formed around this event, whether it's positive or negative.

If it's negative, we call it a 'negative future'. The technique of weeding negative futures is to find that bundle of resonant energy and then take back the energy you have given to it. The bundle will fall apart and no longer influence you, as you retrieve some of your power that was lost to you.

So what does all of this have to do with your panic attacks, or anxiety, or obsessive compulsive disorder, or post traumatic stress disorder? Despite genetic tendencies, something has to trigger these conditions.

This is easy to see with the post traumatic stress disorder, and much harder to see with the other three. Fortunately, you don't need to know what events triggered these problems to end them.

Remember, it doesn't have to make sense to work for you. All you have to do is suspend your disbelief long enough to give the exercise an honest try.

Now, let's look at the actual technique of weeding negative futures.
