Zoloft and Weight Gain

Zoloft and Weight Gain

Hi Katee,

I also gained 40 pounds when I first started taking Zoloft, went up about 10 pound a month. I joined Weight Watchers and have taken about 10 of that off over 2 years. I am now in withdrawal from Zoloft and hope hope hope to regain some control over my weight.

I see everywhere it is written that people lose weight on Zoloft. When I first started on the drug in 1999, the label said "possible weight gain or weight loss." Now it only says weight loss. I think the label was changed so as not to scare people off of taking the drug.

I don't believe you can trust drug labels anymore. The pharmaceutical companies just want to sell the drugs so they tell you the withdrawal is terrible, but give you no specifics and talk about suicide and agression because as women these things scare us, and don't mention the nausea, brain zaps, dizziness, hot flashes, aches and flu like symptoms, all of which are to me a lot more manageable than suicide or homicide.

So far have I not had any feelings of geat depression or agression, just hope that when the irritating and uncomfortable withdrawal is over I'll be back to normal.

This web site and others like it have helped immensely, because if you try to get information from the drug companies or even your doctor, they just say.."Well maybe you need to stay on it for the rest of your life like Thyroid mediciation if it feels so bad coming off of it."

For me, I think part of the weight gain was that the Zoloft made it so I didn't care about exercise anymore when I had exercised everyday before. After I started Zoloft, I didn't feel the need to obsess about anything including my weight which went up 10 pounds every month until I really needed the Zoloft so as not to feel depressed and panicked by my weight.

I wish you all the best
